Library services

The Central Library is a place that offers easy access to every kind of information in any form (printed, digital…), as well as providing advisory and orientation services to help users find their way through this wide range of information. The extensive range of specialised books (more than 200,000 items in total) deserves special mention in this context.

The Central Library is a place for encounters with the arts, in particularly with literature. The traditional range of items with a strong literary emphasis is being complemented by a wide selection of material on music, dance, theatre, painting, architecture, photography, film, and new forms of electronic art. As well as housing its own events, the library also provides up-to-date information on external events, thus encouraging users to experience and explore these arts further.

The Central Library encourages users to experience the fun side of knowledge, science, and education. In times when people are forced to confront new challenges in their professional and private lives and to access retrievable information and knowledge on an ongoing basis, the library can be a place where scientific and educational content, edited for popular usage, can be explored in a pleasurable way.

The Central Library provides help and guidance in today’s world...
...helping users to engage with the past, the present, and the future. The exploration of other life spheres and cultures as well as one’s own relation to life and the world, and the investigation of the past, the present, and the future of one’s own region as well as those of others are important parts of what the library has to offer.

The Central Library is a place for media education.
It continues its mission to promote reading with other means: Even in the age of the Internet, reading remains the basic cultural technique in our world. We promote the meaningful use of the new media with computer literature, guidance, and training events and workshops.

The Central Library stands for firm principles
The Central Library aims at contributing to an open, tolerant climate in the City of Vienna, characterised by fruitful cooperation and respect for others. Providing media for democratic and political education, specialised offers for minorities and marginal groups, as well as events that present or reflect on current topics from city politics or city culture are all part of this mission.

The Central Library provides learning tools for your success
Self-determined, life-long learning skills and an ability for joined-up thinking make up the core competences of our knowledge-based society. Individual, self-directed learning relies on concrete support. The Central Library offers this support, in particular in the areas of computer and language learning. And, through the way the library arranges its content, it is able to capture the attention of its visitors with unexpected insights and experience.

The Central Library is always on the lookout
for co-operations with other cultural and educational establishments, enterprises, and other institutions, with the goal of pooling competences and resources and exploring alternative financing methods for its services.

The Central Library is a centre for popular media
In addition to media for educational or professional purposes, the library also offers a wide range of popular fiction and non-fiction, leisure guides, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and video games to take care of the relaxing side of things – directly in the library or at home, with items borrowed from the library.

Colleges

The Central Library structures its offer of knowledge, information, and entertainment according to the "college model".
