What makes Zirkusgasse special? Various things, for instance women, Uganda, and mattresses.
Why women? Because for many years, one of the focus areas of this branch has been literature and specialised publications by / about/ for women. For instance, we have been collecting the good old feminist flagship publication "Emma" since the early 1970s.
Why Uganda? Because Ms Hirsch, the head of this branch, has spent many years involved in development aid projects for and in Uganda and also collects books about the country.
Why mattresses? Because we had some custom-made so that kids and youngsters can relax or, to put it more trendily, "hang out" in comfort while using the comprehensive range of books, CDs, DVDs, Internet etc. on offer.
What are the librarians particularly proud of? Well, the fact that, according to one faithful reader, this is the "deli" of libraries, where quality is valued and a book is not immediately thrown on the scrap heap just because it doesn't look as good as new anymore. This quality-conscious approach is also reflected in our range of DVDs, which is slowly but surely growing into a remarkable collection and that we will extend even further in future – our promise to film buffs everywhere.
This area of Vienna has traditionally had a rich theatre and circus scene that survives to this day – in line with tradition, all that remains for us to say is "Come one, come all!" We’re looking forward to it.
