A large sign on the wall of a red-brick council estate, right next to the entrance gate, reads "Städtische Bücherei" – "Municipal Library". The official name has long been changed to "Vienna Libraries" long ago, but given the long-standing tradition of the place it would be a shame to blast a hole into the wall just to replace a sign. After all, the housing estate dates back to the inter-war socialist era known as "Red Vienna", and already had its own workers' library back then. The massive iron grid gate next to the sign is the entrance to the impressive building. Though it may look a little forbidding, the door to the vestibule will open automatically as soon as you ring the bell labelled "Bücherei" ("library") during our opening hours. Now you are nearly there: just a few more stairs up and across the hall, then some stairs up and a few more down again. You will find that the library is comfortably warm in winter and cool in summer. What is more, it offers a scenic view of Allerseelenkirche (All Soul's Church), an architectural gem hidden in the garden next door.
While the premises breathe history, the library stock is everything but outdated. Our media are selected with care and updated continuously. We are particularly committed to permanently expanding the range of DVDs, audio books and English language novels. Most books even look like new because our readers – and we hope to count you among them – make a point of treating them as carefully as their own property.
By the way: we also offer Internet access for all library users.
At our 2 PC workstations, readers can surf the Internet free of charge for 30 minutes at a time (- you may want to give us a call beforehand to reserve a PC for Internet access.) Make sure you register in advance when coming with a kindergarten class or student group for one of our free children's events, which range from fun guided tours of the library or riddle games to readings with arts and crafts activities. We also offer picture-book cinema for small kids, Japanese paper theatre, language art and lyrics classes, short courses on how to use non-fiction books, and much more. Just call our children's librarian, Ms Angela Boyer, at 405 42 90. She will be happy to help you and your young friends explore the library on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Though we have a special programme for kids and young people, we are at the service of all readers. Our staff will be happy to provide every form of assistance you may need – from specific literature recommendations to complex book searches.
