phib – Philadelphiabrücke library

It might be a bit rude but let’s start by asking you a favour: When you talk about this library to others, please refer to it as "Philadelphiabrücke library" and not as "Meidling library", because there are two libraries in the district of Meidling. Of course you can also call us the Youth Library, which – although technically this is only half the truth – quite hits the bull’s eye.

We can even offer you a mnemonic device for remembering our correct name. Philadelphia was the capital of the US between 1790 and 1800 – and at that time it was also the second largest city in the world after London. The Philadelphiabrücke library with an area of 900 square metres and a holding of 60,000 items is the second largest branch of the Vienna Public Libraries after the Central Library on Gürtel. These figures do not mean anything to you? Well, let's try something else: Our premises could accommodate three and a half tennis courts (which, however, would not make much sense). And if you borrowed our entire inventory, you could read at least two of our books, watch two of our DVDs or listen to two of our CDs every single day of your life.

Technically, that would not be a problem at all – smooth processes are guaranteed by our self-booking system and, unique at the Vienna Public Libraries, two machines for returning items. By the way, talking about technology, have we mentioned that we have 12 PCs with Internet connection?

So our library is a modern one, there is no doubt about it. And we are not lacking in cosiness either, quite on the contrary: One of our readers once said, "This place is like heaven." Well, we are not commenting on that one and we try to stay as neutral as we can since we do not want to promise more than we can deliver. However, fact is that our library is very spacious, bright, friendly, and cosy. And on top of that our shelves do not only harbour our books and other media but are also pleasant to the eye and are arranged to awaken the curiosity of the library visitors. And our flooring challenges you to take a closer look.

Taking a closer look – or rather taking a closer listen – is what you should do primarily in our music department where we offer a unique selection of CDs from all genres, music journals, songbooks, teaching material etc.

So, pay us a visit – we are looking forward to it!
