Although our library is often compared to the Central Library situated on Gürtel, it is unlikely that one will be mistaken for the other. Apart from the fact that we are not surrounded by the Gürtel ringroad and the appearance of the two buildings differs somewhat, in our library you stand a real chance of walking away with the latest bestseller or other items that you would have to queue up for in other places. And in Mariahilf, it is also less likely that you will have to fight for an Internet seat (metaphorically speaking, of course).
Generally speaking, our inventory and our technological standards mean that we can legitimately call ourselves a large-scale, state-of-the-art city library. However, given our size and excellent location, you'd be surprised how many visitors walk straight past our recessed front door – although we’re easy to find when you know what to look for: We're the ones with the beautifully decorated window – no, not the one with the film posters. That’s the Apollo cinema across the road. From where we are, you can easily see the Flak tower, which is situated diagonally across from us in Esterhazy Park.
Although we are to all intents and purposes a city library, we also have a strong regional emphasis and identify very much with the district we are located in – this is reflected not only in a sizeable collection of district-specific literature, but also through joint initiatives with the local Council. Last but not least, our well-equipped premises also make great event locations.
The library is an excellent destination for school visits and we pride ourselves on our close cooperation with local schools. As far as imaginative titles go, we are more than able to keep up with our cinematic neighbour – for instance with events such as "How To Mummify A Classmate" or a chicken lecture with a chicken quiz.
Oh yes, before we forget – don't ask us for the way to the second floor. We don’t have one, that’s the prerogative of that other library, the one on Gürtel. And don't even think about going over there before you’ve worked your way through the 36,000 items of our inventory.
