Hofwiesengasse Library is situated in the heart of the old quarter of Speising and is the only public library in Hietzing. It shares a building from the 1980s with the VHS adult education centre and is a valuable contribution to the renaissance the district is currently undergoing.
Although it is often written that regions like Tuscany or Umbria have experienced too great an influx of foreigners in recent years, we still feel that a love of all things Italian doesn't have to be a bad thing: It doesn't necessarily describe a Yuppie way of life, but rather pleasure in the good things in life and the cultivation of a refined lifestyle – not necessarily with an Italian slant, as reflected in our large selection of international fiction. And as you can see in our broad range of travel guides, everything doesn’t always have to be about Italy…
In compiling our inventory, great attention was paid to highbrow entertainment, such as intelligent detective stories, British humour, films (on DVD), but also travelling. We are currently extending our selection of fiction in English, French, and Italian. Our offer for young readers includes not only a sizeable book collection, but also a large number of CDs, videos, and DVDs. A pleasant side effect of our lovingly compiled inventory is that we really know what we're talking about – which means that we can help you find the right title for you. By the way, all the stuff about sophisticated entertainment and expert assistance also holds true for our offer for young readers.
The library is situated within easy reach of all local transport connections – two tram lines, two municipal train lines and four bus lines. If you are travelling by car, you will be pleased to find that the car park behind the VHS adult education centre is also open for visitors to the library.
And if you find the door to the VHS locked during the summer months or around Christmas, don't fret – the library is still open. During these times, the entrance is through a lattice door at the back of the building.
Due to the somewhat limited space we have available, we have found it best to concentrate on the traditional task of a library – the lending of books, with a travel section reaching from Alexandria to Zimbabwe. The committed staff and the excellent location in the heart of a sprawling district ensure that the library remains an essential part of the local cultural infrastructure. After all, man can't live on bruschetta alone…
